While I was scouting for a decent set of used 750i calipers to upgrade my brakes,
the volume knob on the Alpine 7831 head unit went cuckoo and the player started to have
difficulty reading discs that have previously played fine. The problem with the volume
knob was particularly irritating because it does not respond according to action, i.e.
either nothing happens, the volume goes the wrong way, or the volume moves in huge
increments! Ouch! I sent the player to an Alpine dealer to try to get the problem sorted\
out. They changed the laser pickup - effectively fixing the disc reading problem.
However, the problem with the volume knob wasn't entirely fixed. As such, I sent the
player back to the dealer again. I've been driving without music for more than 2 weeks
now and it has been a real pain, especially when stuck in hour-long traffic. I've decided
to look for a replacement head unit.
By the way, it's new year's eve. HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone...

I recently fixed an mtech-II steering wheel on my car. I've been on the lookout
for one for a while but they're not easy to come by and when they do, they're
not exactly cheap for used parts. I paid USD120 which I thought was too much for
what I would consider a cosmetic part/item. Nevertheless, after having it for
more than 2 weeks, I think it's money well spent. From the driver's seat, the
dashboard now looks much more inviting compared to when it had the ugly standard four
spoke (non-airbag) steering wheel. The mtech-II wheel is comfortable to grip
with strategically placed thumb and palm rest. The size of the steering wheel is
much smaller (about 365mm, I believe) compared to the standard steering wheel - giving the
driving position a sportier feel. Overall, it's a highly recommended upgrade!

It seems that one of the most popular brake upgrades for the e34 is to replace them with
brakes from the e32 750i. Its a very cost effective upgrade since used calipers and boosters
can be found from breakers and the price of OEM brake discs and pads are very reasonable.
I would definitely need to buy new discs and brake pads though. That being the case, I'm
thinking of getting one of those more popular aftermarket replacement discs like the ATE power
discs and EBC brake pads. But I'm fairly certain that the standard 750i brakes would already
be more than sufficient for me. I would not want to sacrifice the qualities of standard
brakes, (such as their quiet operation and good braking performance in a wide range of
conditions) for that extra stopping power that I
may never use in the first place.
