The Ultimate Driving Machine is now also
available in the compact class. In the autumn of 2004, BMW will
showcase for the very first time the BMW 1 Series - a compact class car with five
doors. The 1 Series is expected to provide BMW with strategic profitable
growth by entering the compact class segment. BMW is hoping to gain a
disproportionately large share of the market by marketing the 1 Series as a premium
car with a unique concept.
Like all the other BMWs, the 1 Series has a front-mounted engine and rear wheel drive.
However, the drive and suspension has
been enhanced by a particularly stiff body and
aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of just 0.29. The
fifth door (the hatch) opens to reveal a variable luggage compartment that offers 330 to 1150
liters of storage space. The 1 Series
will have a length of 4.23 meters,
exactly 24 centimeters shorter than
BMW's smallest car currently - the 3 Series saloon.
At the autumn launch, customers will have
a choice of four four-cylinder engines
(see the table above) - 2 petrol engines
and 2 diesel engines. Customers will
have the option of either a manual
six-speed (five-speed on the 116i) or an
automatic six-speed gearbox. The 1
Series will also come with an extensive range of standard safety
equipment - Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Brake Control, Electronic Differential Lock
and a airbag system comprising head airbags for all
seats.
There will also be customization possibilities
for individual customers - keyless
access; bluetooth mobile interface; sports seats
(adjustable backrest width); acoustic Park Distance Control; Bi-Xenon headlights;
high-performance audio and navigation
systems; and the BMW iDrive operating concept.
The 1 Series is manufactured at the ultra-modern Regensburg
plant in Germany.
Note: The BMW 1 Series will celebrate its auto show debut at the Paris Motor Show.
The BMW 1 Series 5-door hatchback model will not be offered in the
US (availability in the US has not been
determined).
